Why is it Useful for a Makeup Artist to Have a Contract?

Makeup artists are often hired for major events like weddings, proms, and special occasions, meaning that both the client and artist should have a clear expectation of what to expect. This means that whether you’re the artist or client, you’ll want to have a contract in place.

When it comes to makeup artist services, be sure to set expectations for how long the application will take from start to finish, itemize your billing, and share what products are going to be used. When there are lots of people involved at events like weddings or parties, you want to be sure your services are clear. Oftentimes, emotions and tensions can run high in these situations, so having a written agreement is crucial.

Important Details of a Makeup Artist Contract

Whether it’s for a wedding, birthday, photoshoot or high school dance, these aspects of the contract should be clear and defined.

  • Determine the style: Clearly outline what services are provided, products that will be used, and how a trial is included to ensure that the client is happy with the look before the big day.
  • Plan for the unexpected: Include a clear policy that outlines cancellation terms, including deadlines and refund conditions for the client and the makeup artist. This protects everyone involved.
  • Budget breakdown: Extras are common for makeup artist contracts, so be sure to include additional charges for travel, lashes, or changes to the look after it’s complete.

Makeup Artist Contract Overview

In addition the the general scope of work and budget, be extra thorough in your makeup artist contract by including the following:

  • Names and contact info: Include names, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses of both the makeup artist and the client, along with any other vendors or service providers that might be involved.
  • Date and location: Pin down exact dates and times, especially when working with bridal clients. Include any fees or penalties that will arise from late or no shows as well as any other delays that may hinder the artist from having enough time to do their job well (like a client double booking with a hair stylist).
  • Scope of work: Detail exactly what makeup services are included, such as the style, products, and any additional services that take extra time or product to be prepared in advance. If a trial is offered, include the details and cost.
  • Trial session: This is a common part of providing makeup services, and the contract should state if the trial is included, or if it’s billed separately.
  • Payment terms: Clearly outline the total cost, any deposits required, when the balance is due, and the accepted payment methods.
  • Cancellation Policy: This protects the makeup artist and the client from any last-minute issues.
  • Liability and Insurance: Include standard liability clauses and proof of insurance coverage.
  • Confidentiality: If necessary, include a clause protecting sensitive information.

Be Clear About Collecting Payments

As a makeup artist, you’re often in a high-paced environment. Be sure to outline your payment terms, so on the day of your service, you’re not left forgotten and unpaid.

Ask for a deposit upfront to ensure your preparation and travel time is taken care of at minimum. This also helps to ensure your client is serious about the service. When it comes to both the deposit and the payment for services, let the client know If you prefer cash, check or online payment services like PayPal or Venmo. Also make it clear when you expect to be paid, whether that’s before or directly following the service.
